Christmas Light Rental vs. Buying Your Own Lights

Buying your own Christmas lights can seem like the simpler option—until you start figuring out how many strands you need, which lights will work where, how you’ll get them installed, and what happens when something stops working in December.

That’s where renting starts to look very different. With a professionally installed display, you don’t own the lights, but you also don’t have to install, maintain, take down, or store them. Nutri-Green offers holiday lighting for Tulsa-area homeowners through Hook & Ladder Holiday Décor on a lease, giving homeowners another way to approach Christmas decorating without taking on all the work that comes with owning the display.

Christmas Light Rental vs. Buying: What’s the Difference?

When you buy Christmas lights, you own them and are responsible for installing, maintaining, taking down, and storing them unless you hire someone to handle those tasks.

With Hook & Ladder Holiday Décor, the lights are leased as part of a professional service that includes design, installation, maintenance, takedown, and storage. The better choice depends largely on the size of your display, how much of the work you want to handle yourself, and whether owning the lights is important to you.

What Buying Actually Commits You To

Owning your lights means owning everything that happens to them. The strands that worked in December have to make it through months in storage, and any problems often aren't discovered until you pull them out and plug them in again.

Consumer-grade lights can vary considerably in durability. Over time, sockets can corrode, wires and connections can wear out, and replacing individual strands can make it harder to maintain consistent color and brightness across a larger display.

Then there is the installation itself. Buying the lights doesn’t get them on the roofline. Either you install and maintain them yourself, or you hire someone to handle some of that work, and maintenance of customer-owned lights may not be included.

What You Get When You Rent

With a lease, the lights belong to the installer. Hook & Ladder’s agreement covers both the lease and maintenance of the display, with required service calls included, so the product and responsibility for it stay in the same hands.

The display starts with a design plan tailored to your property, rather than a collection of lights purchased piece by piece. Bids are itemized, allowing you to choose the parts of the display you want, including rooflines, windows, bushes, tree wrapping or canopy lighting, sidewalk and driveway outlining, wreaths, bows, and garlands.

The Midseason Difference

Oklahoma weather can be hard on outdoor holiday décor. Wind can pull clips loose, ice can weigh down runs, and a section of lights can stop working halfway through December.

When you own the lights, it's your responsibility to get the display working again unless you have a separate service arrangement. With Hook & Ladder, service calls are included in the lease, so Nutri-Green can address problems without an additional service charge.

That helps keep the display looking the way it was intended throughout the season without sending you back onto a ladder in cold weather.

After the Holidays

Owning the lights also means dealing with them in January. They have to come down, be organized, and be stored somewhere dry and protected until the next season. Rushed takedown or poor storage can also leave you sorting through damaged or tangled lights the following year.

Rental removes that job from your list. Hook & Ladder removes the display after the first of the new year, packs the lights into storage containers, and stores them until the following season. Nothing has to take up space in your attic or garage.

Changing the Look Year to Year

Buying a display also means working with the inventory you already own. Switching from warm white to multicolor requires different lighting and may necessitate purchasing additional materials.

A leased display gives you more flexibility. Hook & Ladder customers can change light color from one year to the next at no additional cost. You can also change the design, with pricing adjusted when the scope of the display changes.

If you keep the same display, pricing remains the same from year to year.

Commercial-Grade Holiday Lighting

Many lights sold directly to homeowners are consumer-grade products. Hook & Ladder uses commercial-grade LED lights along with products selected for professional holiday displays.

Its pre-lit wreaths and garlands feature heavier construction, more tips, and stronger wire, while specialty décor and lawn ornaments are sourced from professional distributors.

For homeowners who want a larger or more elaborate display, leasing provides access to those materials without having to purchase, maintain, and store the entire inventory themselves.

When Buying Still Makes Sense

Ownership isn’t the wrong choice for everyone. If your display is a porch rail and a wreath, decorating is a family tradition you enjoy doing yourself, or you want to use the same small collection of lights for years, then buying may be a better fit.

If you're handling the installation yourself, review our Christmas light decorating safety tips before getting started.

The case for rental becomes stronger as displays get bigger, higher, and more complicated. Second-story rooflines, tree canopies, long driveway runs, and larger custom displays require more equipment, more installation time, and more work again when January arrives.

Who Installs Your Christmas Lights?

Hook & Ladder Holiday Décor was founded by Butch Dellis, a Tulsa Fire Department captain and owner of Nutri-Green.

Installation crews include trained Nutri-Green employees and off-duty firefighters, and a certified electrician is available for unusual setups that require additional electrical expertise.

Installations run from November 1 through December 22. Because the schedule fills as the holiday season approaches, homeowners planning a larger display are better served by starting the consultation process earlier in the fall.

Renting trades ownership of the lights for a service that covers the design, installation, maintenance, takedown, and storage of the display.

For homeowners who want a larger, professionally designed display without handling those jobs themselves, leasing can be a practical alternative to buying and maintaining a full collection of holiday lights.
