Fall Brings a Different Set of Problems

As temperatures shift, some insects remain active and continue feeding, while others begin moving into protected areas where they will spend the winter. Symptoms of plant disease can also become more noticeable as the effects of heat, drought, or inconsistent watering accumulate.

These problems do not always cause obvious damage right away. However, they can leave trees and shrubs stressed heading into the colder months and less prepared for healthy growth in spring.

Year-Round Care That Changes With the Season

Our tree and shrub care program changes with the seasons. It moves from spring feeding and foliage protection during active growth to late-summer treatments and fall and winter protection.

Each stage addresses the conditions trees and shrubs face at that point in the year. In late summer and early fall, attention turns to insects, plant disease, and lingering summer stress as plants move toward dormancy.

From Late-Summer Treatment to Winter Protection

During the transition from summer into fall, the program shifts from managing summer stress to preparing your trees and shrubs for the months ahead. Late-summer foliage protection addresses fall-feeding insects and existing plant disease based on the conditions affecting your plants.

As appropriate trees and shrubs enter dormancy, fall and winter care can also include a dormant oil application. When weather conditions and product directions allow, dormant oil thoroughly coats bark and branches to target certain overwintering insects and eggs, including scale, aphids, and mites. This helps reduce the number of pests that survive the winter and become active when growth resumes in spring.

Because dormant oil works through direct contact, proper timing and thorough coverage are important. It is also not suitable for every plant, which is why identifying the species and its specific needs comes first.

For plants that need additional support, fall and winter care may also include deep-root fertilization after the first freeze. This treatment delivers fertilizer and soil conditioners beneath the surface, where the root system can access them.

The Right Treatment Starts With an Inspection

When you first contact us for tree and shrub care, we begin with a thorough inspection of your property. We look for signs of insect activity, plant disease, dehydration, and other conditions that could be affecting your landscape.

Similar symptoms can have very different causes, so our recommendations are based on what we find, the plants growing on your property, and the time of year—not a one-size-fits-all spray schedule.
