Weed Control in Tulsa: The Fall Window Most Lawns Miss

​Your lawn may look clean in September, but that does not mean weeds are taking the season off.

Henbit, chickweed, annual bluegrass, and other winter annual weeds begin their life cycle in the fall. Depending on the weed and the weather, germination can begin as temperatures cool and moisture becomes available. The plants may remain small through much of the winter before becoming far more noticeable in late winter and early spring.

That is why some of the most important weed control for a Tulsa lawn happens before there is much to see.

Oklahoma State University recommends applying fall pre-emergent herbicides ahead of winter annual germination. Its lawn-care guidance specifically recommends completing pre-emergent control for weeds such as henbit, chickweed, and annual bluegrass by about the second week of September.

That does not make September 15 a universal cutoff for every weed, lawn, or product. Weather, moisture, weed species, and treatment choice all affect timing. But for Tulsa homeowners, the larger point is important: fall weed prevention starts before the weeds become obvious.

Your Lawn Can Look Clean While Winter Weeds Are Getting Started

​Winter annual weeds run on a different schedule from crabgrass and many of the other weeds homeowners associate with warm weather.

Henbit and chickweed germinate in the fall when conditions are favorable. Annual bluegrass also establishes during the cooler part of the year. While Bermuda and Zoysia lawns are beginning to slow down, these winter weeds can be getting established underneath the radar.

That is why a lawn that looks relatively weed-free in September can look very different a few months later.

Pre-emergent herbicides are used before susceptible weeds become established. They create a treated zone in the soil that interferes with weed seedlings as they begin developing.

Because they are preventive treatments, there may be no dramatic visual change after an application. The result shows up later in the weeds that never become established.

If You Had Purple Weeds Last Spring, Pay Attention This Fall

If your Tulsa lawn was dotted with purple flowers in February or March, henbit or purple deadnettle may have been responsible.

Both are cool-season weeds that can establish well before their flowers make them easy to notice. If they were heavy in parts of the lawn last spring, those areas are worth paying attention to again because weed seeds can remain in the soil.

Annual bluegrass can be even easier to overlook because it looks like grass.

It typically appears as lighter green growth within the lawn and often develops noticeable seedheads in spring. As temperatures rise toward summer, annual bluegrass dies, and areas where it grew heavily can be left looking thin.

Fall Pre-Emergent and Fescue Overseeding Need to Be Planned Together

If you are planning to aerate and overseed fescue this fall, weed control requires a little more planning.

Many pre-emergent herbicides that interfere with weed seedlings can also interfere with desirable grass seed. Oklahoma State specifically advises against applying fall pre-emergent herbicides to areas that will be seeded.

That matters in Tulsa because fall is also the preferred season for establishing or overseeding cool-season grasses such as tall fescue.

The exact restrictions depend on the herbicide being used, so there is no universal number of days that works for every product. Product labels and the condition of the newly seeded turf also matter.

If winter weeds have already started growing, the strategy changes.

Pre-emergent herbicides are intended to prevent susceptible weeds from becoming established. Once weeds are up and actively growing, post-emergent weed control becomes the more appropriate approach.

October and November are good times to control many winter broadleaf weeds because the plants are still young and actively growing. Small weeds are generally easier to manage than mature plants that are flowering and producing seed in spring.

The right treatment still depends on what is growing and what type of grass surrounds it. A product appropriate for established Bermuda is not automatically appropriate for fescue or newly seeded turf.

Cooler weather can also mean slower visible results. A treatment does not necessarily need to produce an immediate brown or wilted weed to be working.

What Should You Expect After a Fall Pre-Emergent Treatment?

Usually, not much visually.

A pre-emergent application targets weeds before they become established, so it is not meant to make existing weeds suddenly disappear.

These products also need to reach the upper portion of the soil where susceptible seedlings begin developing. Oklahoma State recommends watering pre-emergent herbicides into the soil when sufficient rainfall does not occur after application.

How much water is needed and how soon it should be applied can vary by product, so the label remains the final authority for any herbicide application.

The benefit of good fall timing becomes more apparent later, when fewer targeted winter annual weeds reach the lawn.
